Each of the conventional-style data recorders has dedicated terminals for the input of the engine RPM signals. This signal is sourced with a combination of a primary spark sensor and a fiber optic cable. The primary spark sensor picks up the spark pulse between the magneto and the coil/control box, or at the tach terminal on an electronic ignition control box. A fiber optic cable is then used to relay the signal from the spark pickup module to the recorder. Battery and magneto ignition systems require different spark pickup modules that are not interchangeable.
