1-A DATA RECORDER
Vehicles using
high amperage magnetos, heavy fuel volumes, high cylinder pressures, and/or
superchargers present a unique challenge to data acquisition. They are especially
prone to creating interference in the recorded data.
Over the years, as the mags, pumps, and blowers have all increased
in capacity, and the potential for problems grew, the use of Racepak Pro Series
recorders has become standard fare. The
reason was simple. Racers realized that Racepak’s recorders were capable of
operating efficiently and reliable in these harsh environments. If you walk
through the pro pits at any NHRA event today you will find that nearly 100%
of the cars are equipped with Racepak Pro Series data recorders.
The Pro 1A
recorder is used in many of the cars mentioned above. It is popular in applications
such as the Alcohol Funny Cars and Dragster, A/Fuel Dragsters, and Nostalgia
Top Fuel cars. The reason for its popularity can be attributed to the ease
in which racers in these classes can record the functions they most often
monitor. In it’s base configuration the Pro 1A includes the ability to monitor
engine RPM from two magnetos (only one spark pickup and fiber optic cable
is included), the driveshaft RPM (sensor and split collar magnet kit included),
eight exhaust gas temperatures (thermocouple probes, junction boxes, &
cables included), and a battery voltage sensor. The Pro 1A contains an internal
battery, and a battery charger is also included as part of the system.
Unique to
the Pro 1A is the ability to house up to five of the ‘drop-in’ style analog
transducers in the recorder’s case. Two transducers (of your choice) are included
in the recorder’s base price. If your need for analog channels is greater
than five a Pro Analog Transducer box can be adapted to the recorder bringing
the channel capacity up to a total of eight. Transducers for the analog channels
must be purchased separately.
This recorder
can be equipped to record the second magneto by simply purchasing the pickup
and fiber optic cable. It can also be upgraded to record two additional digital
channels, and, as mentioned above, up to eight analog channels.
Pro 1A data
recorders sample information at a rate of 40 times per second, with a recording
length of 50 seconds. Their dimensions are 2.750” high x 8.625” long x 5.125”
wide. Weight is 3 pounds, 2 ounces.
Viewing information
recorded by the Pro 1A is accomplished by uploading the data to a PC using
the Racepak DataLink data analysis software.
This software, detailed elsewhere on this site, enables the user to
view their monitored functions in graph and numeric formats. Due to the applications
on which the Pro 1A are used a software and download kit has been created
specifically for these vehicles. This kit contains the DataLink Standard version
software and a data cartridge download.
